While some Northland students were nervous as the clippers touched their heads most had fun shaving for a good cause.
Twelve students and one teacher from Whangarei Boys' High School said goodbye to their hair for Shave for a Cure - a signature fundraising event for Leukaemia and Blood CancerNew Zealand which sees thousands of Kiwis get sponsored to shave their heads in support of people living with blood cancer.
Whangarei Boys' High School principal Karen Gilbert-Smith said she was proud of the students and staff who took part last week. The school was among dozens of organisations throughout Northland that took part.
"It was their own initiative. Liam Thomson organised it and set up the page and organised the staff," Ms Gilbert-Smith said.
She said two teachers were in charge of shaving the boys. She said they had fun as music played in the school hall, and other students turned out in support.
"One boy did look nervous, he had reasonably long hair and he just had that look in his eye. Another boy had hair past his shoulders but he was there for support and there were some jokes thrown around about whether he would be joining in," she said.
The students and teacher raised $200 on the day in addition to $300 they raised through their online fundraising page.
