Tuatara Design Store is holding its inaugural Nguhuru Harvest Festival Kai Competitions honouring Matariki by celebrating the seasonal use of local foods with traditional preparation and cooking.

Matariki (the Maori New Year) is the time of completed harvest, rest, reflection and celebration with family and whanau.

At the first Matariki food event at Tuatara last week, rewena, takakau, frybread and homemade jam took prizes.

Tonight's kai time will focus on savoury preserves - smoked seafoods, wild pork, kaanga pirau, chutneys and relishes.

Anyone is welcome to enter their foods, or come along to taste and cast their vote.

The "people's choices" win prizes were donated by Bob Café, Ataahua (formerly Hair Heaven), Himalayan Trading Post, McCoy&Thomas; Sports, Mad Butcher, and Tuatara artists Kiri Peeni, Leilani Rickard, and others.
