A woman who was robbed of her handbag was taken to Whangarei Hospital and treated for a broken arm, cuts and bruises.

A woman who was robbed of her handbag was taken to Whangarei Hospital and treated for a broken arm, cuts and bruises.

A 58-year-old woman suffered a broken arm when she was assaulted and robbed as she was walking along Otaika Rd in Whangarei around 7.50am on Saturday.

Her upper left arm was broken in two places and she received cuts and bruising when she was attacked about 100m south of the Maunu Rd/SH1 intersection.

The man who attacked her, described as a Maori, took the woman's shoulder bag and fled in a silver station wagon with tinted windows that had been parked on SH1, facing south, opposite Matipo Place, Otaika.

The woman was treated at Whangarei Hospital.

Traffic was moderate at the time and police want to speak to the drivers and passengers of the following vehicles who they believe would have witnessed the aggravated robbery:
- A white light truck similar in appearance to a milk truck with a refrigerator unit , which was heading north along SH1 towards the Maunu Rd intersection. There appeared to be a green and red swirl on the side of the truck.

- A white four-door, 4WD flat-deck truck, heading north along SH1 toward the Maunu Rd intersection.

- A two-door Nissan Safari-type vehicle, dark grey and light grey, towing a large tandem trailer heading south.

Police are also appealing for any members of the public who have information regarding the identity of the offender/s or the vehicle used to contact Whangarei police immediately on 09 430 4500 or they can anonymously phone 0800 CRIME STOPPERS.
