Women's singing group the Whangarei Harmony Chorus has recently celebrated its 20th year of being in good voice.

That's the official count - the Harmony Chorus, part of the Sweet Adelines New Zealand, formed in 1992 but did not become chartered until 1995.

Since then the group has sung at many community and civic functions, competitions and concerts.

About 30 past members and musical directors were in town for a get-together, cake-cutting and singalong to mark the 20th anniversary. One former member came from as far as Perth.

Past director Pam Black's group Cruize Control performed for the occasion. There was also a debut performance of four young singers who are daughters of current members and are hoping to perform with Young Women in Harmony in Auckland in June.

The chorus is entering the New Zealand Sweet Adelines competition in Auckland in May, where 30 members will be on stage. The youngest current member is 17 and the oldest in her 70s.

The chorus is looking for a new director to take over in August, and welcomes new members.

A meet-the-chorus night for prospective new singers will be held in June.
