Final update (4pm):

The last wreckage was removed by heavy-lifting cranes form Whangarei at 3.45pm. The road is expected to re-open by 5pm.

UPDATE:

Police wish to advise motorists that Kerikeri Road between SH10 and Maraenui Drive is still closed and is not expected to reopen until at least 2pm.

Police are no longer at the scene but the road will remain closed until the clean up is complete.

UPDATE:

Police say Kerikeri Rd will be closed for several more hours as they investigate the scene of a fatal crash involving two trucks.

Kerikeri Road between SH10 and Maraenui Drive is closed and diversions are in place.

Specialist cranes from Whangarei were being taken to Kerikeri to help with the removal of the damaged trucks.

The serious crash unit were at the scene.

One of the truck drivers was cut free and taken to Bay of Islands in Kawakawa.

Diversions are in place on Kerikeri Rd and SH10 following a head-on collision involving two trucks on Kerikeri Rd this morning.

Original report:

Two trucks crashed head-on in the Bay of Islands this morning, leaving one driver trapped.

The trucks collided at 6.20am on Kerikeri Rd just off State Highway 10.

Northern fire communications shift manager Jarron Philips said emergency services were working to free the trapped driver.

Their conditions were unknown.

Kerikeri Rd was closed and traffic was being diverted.
