After opening the season with a number of surprise results, week two of the rugby season looks like it will serve up a few more interesting match-ups - and all the while club cricket presses on in one-day format.

With last year's bottom place getter, Waipu, scoring an upset win over Kamo last weekend in the Bayleys Southern Districts Premier competition, they will be looking to put on a good show with their first home game of the season.

While Waipu host Hora Hora, who won a rematch of last season's final in round one, the other surprise winner from the opening weekend also have their first home game. A new-look, and sharp Otamatea premier side have a local derby against Wellsford in Kaiwaka.

Fresh from their 49-10 thumping of 2013 semifinalists Mid Western, Otamatea will be wanting to turn around their disappointing effort in the first local derby match last season.

Last year Wellsford pummelled Otamatea 50-15 in Kaiwaka in round four, after Wellsford had a woeful start to the season by losing two of their three match-ups to that point.

This year, however, Wellsford are coming off a strong start, after they played out a comfortable 40-10 victory at home over the Western Sharks.

In other matches this weekend, Hikurangi will be hoping to score a few more points against Mid Western.

Last week Hikurangi opened their account with an 18-5 loss at the hands of a solid Old Boys Marist side.

This week though, Old Boys Marist have the tough task of travelling to Hukerenui to take on Mid Northern, who will no doubt be looking for revenge after last week's 31-25 loss to Hora Hora.

Jarem Henare of Mid Northern will be wanting to off-load a few more balls like he did this one last week in the tackle of Hora Hora's Ume Fosita.

The final premier clash sees opening round losers Western Sharks and Kamo clash in Dargaville.

With both sides coming off heavy opening round losses, picking up the first competition points will be an incentive.

Meanwhile, in the club cricket scene, the Lion Red Cup one-day competition continues as sides pursue their chances of being in the final later this month.

Fresh from winning the Oxford Trust two day competition - and beating Kaipara Flats last weekend - Maungakaramea host Kamo.

With Kamo too coming off the back of a win last weekend, against Onerahi Central, it should make for a good match-up.

Other match-ups see City host Onerahi Central at the Cobham Oval, while Zest Insurance Whangarei Boys' High School host Kaipara.
