Two people in hospital after State Highway 1 crash north of Whangarei

Two people were taken to hospital after a crash involving two cars blocked State Highway 1 north of Whangarei yesterday.

The crash just after 3pm near a bridge on Great North Rd at Springs Flat involved a 4x4 and a white car.

One person received serious injuries and another moderate injuries. Both were taken to Whangarei Hospital, police said.

The road was cleared just after 4pm.

Danielle Garner, a member of the public who was one of the first at the scene, said the driver of the white vehicle was cut out of the car by firefighters. She said the driver of the 4x4 got out of the vehicle and spoke to police.

After the crash had been cleared, a dent was visible on the barrier on the bridge of the northbound lane.
