It’s been a horror night for car accidents in Northland this evening, with two dead in separate crashes.
One person died after a serious two-car crash in Ruakākā earlier this evening.
Emergency services responded to the crash, where a second person was moderately injured, about 30km south of Whangārei.
The crash on One Tree Point Rd happened about 5.40pm and the road is closed.
“The road is expected to remain closed for some time while the Serious Crash Unit examines the scene,” police said.
Police said motorists should avoid the area.
The second person died in a crash on Pipiwai Rd in Matarau, about 30km west of Whangārei.
Police were called about 8pm.
The road will be closed, with diversions in place.
About 130,000 water connections in Northland will be affected by new plans.
