The Kai Iwi Lakes provided the perfect scene for two top-notch triathlon events.

The annual Avoca Kumara Kai Iwi Lakes Triathlon catered for all ages and disciplines, providing some high quality action.

Whangarei's Bruce Cole-Baker took out the men's long course kayak division in 1:31:23, utilising the lessons learned from his experiences at the Coast to Coast.

Ruth Hutchison, also from Whangarei, took out the women's division in 1:57:41.

Things didn't all go Northland's way as Aucklander Stephen Farrell comfortably won the long course men's swim. Farrell used all the skills gained from being a former international triathlete to finish nearly 12 minutes ahead of Whangarei's Brent Lewis.

In the long course women's swim section, Carolyn Younger of Whangarei took line honours in 1:36:30 with Natasha Bowyer (Auckland) hot on her heels coming in 53 seconds later in 1:37:23.

The short course event consisting of a 350m swim, 9km cycle and 3.8km run was won by Whangarei's Louis Poot in 40:40, followed by impressive 12-year-old Trevor Coetzee in 47:06.

Coetzee was backing up from his race in the secondary schools competition the day before.

Whangarei's Jorja Swain pipped Aucklander Kate Milington by less than a minute in the female section, finishing in 49:55.

In the teams section Karen Morgan, Craig Morgan and Bob Smith from Dargaville Squash Club Team took out the short course team division in 44:46 while Team Trees, consisting of Mike and Oscar Trees, took out the open team Swim division in 1:28:18.

They were followed closely by Team Race NZ's Lee Greer, Leon Blackburn and Jemma O'Donnell (Kai Iwi Lakes) in 1:29.47.

Meanwhile in the ASB Northland Secondary Schools Sports Association Triathlon, Whangarei Boys' and Girls' High Schools made a clean sweep of the major placings in the senior and intermediate events.

Kurt Coetzee and Portia Olney-Kemp took out the under-19 individual divisions, while Lucas Thompson and Alysha Donavan won the under-16 individual events.

In the junior event, Huanui College students Luka Clark and Grace Gardner won their divisions.

Meanwhile, in the sub-junior division, Whangarei Intermediate student Trevor Coetzee and Otamatea High School's Poppy Scott were the winners.
