Three people are contesting a seat on Te Hiku Community Board left vacant by the death of highly-regarded board member Murray Rae in March.

The candidates in the North Cape Subdivision by-election are Melanie Dalziel, Henry Gentry and Kamera Raharaha.

Voting documents will be sent to the subdivision's 1800 voters from June 10 with voting in the postal ballot due to close at noon on July 2.

Mayor John Carter said he was pleased the seat would be contested.

"Community boards are the eyes and ears of the Far North District Council and a vital part of its decision-making process," he said.
