A man reportedly injured during an assault at his Whangārei property last night managed to escape by locking himself inside his vehicle, police say.

A man living at an Old Parua Bay Rd property in Abbey Caves phoned police just after 8pm.

Shane Pilmer, Detective Senior Sergeant of Whangārei CIB, said the man told police he was being assaulted by two men.

“The victim has numerous injuries, and he managed to get to his vehicle and secure himself inside.”

Police arrived and made several arrests at the scene. Pilmer said three people were charged.

Hato Hone St John said the man was transported to Whangārei Hospital by ambulance in a moderate condition.

Two men, aged 67 and 52, and a 68-year-old woman were jointly charged with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

They were due to appear in the Whangārei District Court today.
