A scene from the Broadway cast of The Addams Family, Whangarei Theatre Company's next show.

Whangarei Theatre Company is calling for people to audition for some freakily funny characters.

Remember Gomez and Morticia, their children Wednesday and Pugsley, Uncle Fester, Grandmama and the butler, Lurch?

Yes, it's the oddly appealing Addams family.

The story behind the show, The Addams Family, is about Wednesday, all grown up and in love with Lucas Beineke, a sweet, smart young man from a respectable family.

Wednesday confides in her father and begs him not to tell her mother, meaning Gomez Addams must do something he's never done before - keep a secret from his beloved Morticia.

Everything will change for the whole family on the fateful night they host a dinner for Wednesday's "normal" boyfriend and his parents.

There are roles in the play that actors can really get their teeth into.

As well as the Addams family, characters include the boyfriend Lucas and his parents Mal and Alice Beineke, and The Ancestors, the Addams' ghostly male and female relatives.

Auditioners will be asked to sing a song from the show.

They are welcome to bring their own sheet music or backing track, which can be found on Youtube, or use the a pianist with sheet music provided on the day.

They will also be asked to read/ act out one or two scenes for the character they are auditioning for.

The choreographer will then take them through a quick dance routine.

The director of The Addams Family will be Tane Davis, with production manager Ringi Smith, musical director Sean Scanlen, choreographer Grant Smith and vocal coach Sarah Edgecombe.

Audition dates are Saturday July 15 and Sunday July 16, 10am - 4.30pm at The Riverbank Centre, Reyburn House Lane, Whangarei.

Anyone unable to make those times can contact Ringi Smith, 021 161 2712, to arrange an earlier audition time.
