Two senior Whangarei tennis players will be taking on their rivals across the Tasman in the Australasian Tennis Seniors Teams Carnival next week.

Raewyn Heywood and Janet Agnew from Whangarei are among a group of senior New Zealand players who will be competing in the tournament on the Gold Coast, which starts next week. They fly out today to take on the best senior players in Australasia.

Ms Agnew, a stalwart of Northland and New Zealand's tennis scene, has been asked by Tennis NZ Seniors to be the flagbearer at the opening ceremony.

When asked to be flagbearer she was "completely gob-smacked, proud, honoured and overwhelmed all at the same time".

"Last year Tup Cox was the flagbearer and she has won 50 plus national senior titles so this is truly a great honour to be the flag bearer," Ms Agnew said.

Last year Ms Heywood and Ms Agnew, along with Maryanne Rogers-Benton, Carol Thorpe and Sylvia Wilmshurst won gold medals in the Adelaide tournament in the age group 55 to 64 section 2 of three sections.

"This year we have been promoted to Section 1 of 55 to 59 age group which will be a lot tougher," Ms Agnew said.

There are five venues for this year's competition - Miami Tennis Club, Gold Coast Seniors, KDV Sports, Tweed Heads and Fairways - with 116 teams competing from ages 35 plus to 75 plus in both men's and women's divisions.
