Jeremy Elliot and Madeline Whittam led Northwave Swimming Club's charge at the Dargaville Swim Club Long Course Carnival.

Northland's top young swimmers made their way to Kauri Coast Community Swimming Pool for the well-attended event.

More than 100 competitors took to the pool in a bid for great times and victory spoils, but it was two of Northwave's crew that stood out.

In five races, 16-year-old Elliot grabbed three firsts and a pair of seconds.

He started the day with a second placing in the mixed 50m freestyle (won by Dargaville's Conor Willy) before picking up his first victory.

Elliot comfortably took out the mixed 100m butterfly in 1:05.45, beating Whangarei's Jack Milina and Bream Bay's Rebecca Reade by four and eight seconds respectively.

He then kept Mt Eden's John Ashcroft at bay to win the mixed 200m freestyle before winning the 50m butterfly over Willy and Northwave's Ciara Smith.

Whittam was also in form as she grabbed a pair of first placings.

She romped home to a 25s victory in the day's opening event, the 400m freestyle, before repeating the positioning in the 100m breaststroke.

Northwave's Nellie Clark (1:26.74) and Jackson Somner-Allen of Bream Bay (1:26.90) battled for the other podium finishes.

Willy was a shining light for the home club as he picked up three first placings for himself.

After pipping Elliot in the 50m freestyle, he held off Northwave's Annabell Simpson (30.78) to win the 50m backstroke in 30.56.

Willy also won the 100m freestyle, beating Elliot and Smith to the finish.

The final event of the day was a two-horse race between Simpson and Milina as they looked to take the 200m butterfly spoils.

Simpson held a two second buffer at the 100m mark and despite Milina's best efforts, he could not haul his opponent in.

Dargaville Swimming Club will put their hosting hat on next week as they welcome swimmers for the Northland Age Group Championships on February 19.
