Around 30 members of the Bream Bay Sliders got together for their seventh annual Mid-Winter Festival of Surfing at Waipu Cove last Sunday.
Conditions were good for most of the morning, with the waist-high waves dropping after lunch to become low and "ruffled" in the afternoon.
Bream Bay Sliders clubpresident Gary Kilmore came up from Christchurch especially for the contest. Kilmore will be in the earthquake-damaged city with his family working as a builder for five years, but has vowed to return north for each annual Bream Bay festival.
It featured surfers of all ages, in divisions from under-14s to the over-60s, who are known as "sea dogs".
Damien Tafu gave a standout performance, sliding his way into first place in the under-18 division, while also taking out the Open Men's division.
