The second event of the 2015 Northland Scholastics Surfing Series took place recently, with local surfers vying for places in the team to travel to the New Zealand National Scholastics Championships in Gisborne later this year.
Clean 1-1.5m waves broke all day with light winds and favourable tides making forgreat contest conditions at the Sandy Bay venue.
In the under-14 boys section, there was some excellent surfing with some some strong exchanges in the final between Max Brunker (WBHS) and his younger counterpart Thomas Robinson (Wild Card). It was Brunker's turn to shine and claim his first Northland Scholastics win on home turf.
The strong draw in the under-16 boys was taken out by Jamahl Moselen (Raglan Area School), while Matt Jensen (Bream Bay College) put on a powerful display in the under-18 boys to claim his first victory at a Northland event. The win takes him to the top on the series ratings.
In the under-14 girls, Grace Pevats (WGHS) continued her dominance by putting on a polished display in the clean Sandy Bay waves.
Hot on her heels was Nicole Robinson (WGHS) and Kate Moyle (Kerikeri).
Meg Robinson (WGHS) and Portia Olner-Kemp (WGHS) continued their good form in the semifinals of the under-16 girls.
However, it was a dominant performance from the in-form Billie Scott (WGHS) which helped her secure top honours in the division ahead of Olner-Kemp in the final.
