The seventh logging truck crash in Northland in just over seven weeks happened after a logging truck driver failed to give way, police say.

Police said the driver of the logging truck had failed to give way and subsequently crashed into a ute on Otaika Valley Rd, Whangarei, about 6am yesterday at the Loop Rd intersection. Police said it was a minor collision and a lapse in driver attention was the cause of the crash. No one was injured.

The truck driver has been issued with an infringement notice for failing to give way, police said.

The incident is the third logging truck crash on Otaika Valley Rd in just over seven weeks and the seventh logging truck crash in Northland over the same period of time.

The last logging truck collision on Otaika Valley Rd on May 4 happened when an empty logging truck carrying a trailer heading towards Maungatapere crashed off a right-hand bend, rolled and smashed into a power pole, splitting it in half.

Following this accident Road Transport Forum chief executive Ken Shirley said transport operators had to front up to the situation.

The string of accidents also prompted a public meeting at Otaika Valley Hall last Tuesday attended by more than 150 Otaika Valley and Mangakahia road residents.

Today and tomorrow the Road Transport Forum will be hosting the Rollover Prevention Programme series in Whangarei to prevent truck rollovers. Tonight's event will be at the Kingsgate Hotel from 6pm, and tomorrow's event will be held at Toll Stadium from 6pm.
