Whangarei Boys' High School's top swimmer Callum Prime and Kerikeri High School's rising hockey star Samantha Polovnikoff took out top honours at the 24th annual ASB Northland Secondary School Sports Awards held at ASB Stadium last night.

Prime, the ASB Northland Secondary Schools Sportsman of the Year, has had a successful year in the swimming pool, currently holding 22 Northland swimming records.

He was also selected for the New Zealand Age Group Swimming Team which competed in Australia where he beat some of the country's top swimmers.

Meanwhile, Polovnikoff was named the ASB Northland Secondary Schools Sportswoman of the Year.

Polovnikoff has excelled in hockey this year, playing for the Future Black Sticks, being selected to attend the Junior World Cup training camp, and playing a vital part in the Northland Women's NHL finals appearance amongst her many successes.

The ASB Sporting Excellence Awards for High Performance in a 'Sport Not Offered at Secondary School Level' went to crossfit champions Ioane Job of Whangarei Boys High School and Kyla Smith of Kaitaia College. Both Job and Smith have performed at international level.

The Kerikeri High School Sailing team was named Team of the Year after their inter-dominion win against Australia, finishing top.

A total of 70 Northland Secondary School students were announced as sport code winners in sports covering team and individual competition.

For the first time, ASB is this year offering 2015 winners a 'performance pathway' experience. The ASB Performance Pathway will see three members of Emirates Team New Zealand, including Kerikeri's Olympic medallist Blair Tuke, present a leadership session to the winners. Taking place in December, Ady McKenzie will host informative and interactive sessions on a number of relevant topics, including high performance athlete life and nutrition plus practical demonstrations and testing. ASB will also provide them with financial advice.

ASB Northland regional manager Glen Hardham had a wonderful time at the ASB Secondary School Sports Awards last night, and is looking forward to the ASB Performance Pathway event in December.

"It's always an honour and privilege to partake in the ASB Secondary School Sports Awards; the calibre of sporting talent is astounding. ASB has enjoyed a partnership with Sport Northland since 1991 and it's great to see, year after year, our region's youth excelling in so many areas," Hardham said.
