Everyone had a big smile on their face at the annual Ruakākā Surf Day for people with disabilities.

The sixth surf day - organised by Tiaho Trust in conjunction with the Tokerau Beach Boys - gives people with disabilities an opportunity to catch a wave in a controlled and safe environment.

Jonny Wilkinson, chief executive of Tiaho Trust, said about 28 people took part in the event.

"The participants were really thrilled because normally they just don't get the chance to have an experience like that. The volunteers had a real feel good feeling on the day. Everyone had a big smile on their face," he said.

"Surfing is such a great feeling. No matter how good you are, or how novice you are, you feel like a million bucks when you catch a wave."
