A few finishing touches are needed before Whangarei's flash new mall canopy is formally celebrated.

The 500sq m canvas canopy has been erected over part of the Laneway, in Cameron St Mall, to help make part of the area weather-proof as part of the mall revamp.

The structure will weather-proof the new Cameron and James streets laneway with an ethylene tetrafluoroethylene canopy, a transparent polymer plastic which also covers the Forsyth Barr Stadium in Dunedin. Twelve black steel nikau palm-like poles hold the canopy 13m aloft. Culham Engineering has built the steel framing for the canopy on behalf of chief contractors Fabric Structure Systems.

Paving around the structure needs to be tidied up and lighting installed before the canopy is formally celebrated during the district's Matariki Festival in June.

The work will complete Whangarei District Council's $2.7 million project, which had turned sections of Cameron and James streets into a pedestrian-friendly shared space.
