Severe weather is coming to Northland

Spring is here but it seems the weather has missed the memo as heavy rain and wind is expected across Northland.

A severe weather watch was issued for the region yesterday as a low-pressure system tracked across the country, bringing heavy downpours and strong winds until tomorrow.

Metservice Meteorologist Emma Blades said rain was forecast to be the heaviest last night and this morning, and while rain was expected to ease it would still be wet.

"[Today] is expected to be wet with heavy falls throughout the day and Northeasterlies will rise to gales in the evening. There will be more rain on Tuesday with heavy falls," she said.

Ms Blades said the Northland Regional Council urged Northlanders to keep an eye on weather updates as it was "adeveloping situation".

"At the moment we have issued a severe weather watch so we encourage people to keep updated in case that changes to a weather warning."

She said the watch was in place from yesterday until dawn tomorrow.
