CRASH UPDATE: 12.39pm State Highway 11 between Puketona Junction and Paihia has reopened after a serious accident earlier today.
The crash involved two vehicles colliding at the entrance to the Bay of Islands Holiday Park on Puketona Rd just after 10am today. It appears that one of the vehicles was turninginto the holiday park.
A female in her late teens from Auckland was airlifted to Whangarei Hospital in a critical condition while a second person, also from Auckland and aged under 20, was taken by helicopter in a serious condition.
11.19am Police and other emergency services are at a serious crash in the Bay of Islands that has seen a road blocked and a helicopter on the way to pick up some of the injured.
At least two cars are involved in the accident on Puketona Rd, almost outside the Bay of Islands Holiday Park, with one person understood to be in a critical condition. The Northland Electricity rescue helicopter was due to land shortly.
Puketona Rd has been closed from Puketona Junction to the roundabout on Marsden Rd in Paihia while the accident scene is being worked on and traffic is being diverted down State Highway 10. The accident occurred about 9.30am.
