An improved defence and better ball handling were not enough for hosts Whangarei Boys' High School to beat Massey College during the North Harbour 1A 1st XV competition on Saturday.
Despite trailing the visitors by three tries at the breather, WBHS scored first in the second spell through lock LyricJoyce but Massey College dotted down for its fourth try in the 25th minute.

WBHS surged into attack and had the better of the last 10 minutes but were only rewarded with a penalty kick, taking the score to 22-10 and giving them a chance to try and secure a bonus point in the final minutes of the game.
Bill Hamilton and Joyce in the forwards were outstanding and well supported by a committed pack while the backs showed plenty of "ticker" and were resolute in both attack and defence.
The competition doesn't get any easier for WBHS as favourites Westlake Boys High lie in wait at Takapuna this weekend.
