Rugby: Whangarei boys blitz opposition

Whangarei Boys High School have made the North Harbour 1A First XV semifinals after trouncing Birkenhead College 46-0.

Needing a bonus point win to qualify for the finals, WBHS were highly motivated to put in a top performance against an improving Birkenhead team.

The underfoot conditions in Whangarei were very heavy with players also contending with cold temperatures and a stiff southwesterly breeze.

WBHS played into the wind in the first half and played a sound territorial game to keep Birkenhead camped in their own half for long periods.

WBHS were a little guilty of trying too hard and squandered scoring opportunities, however they clearly looked the stronger of the two teams and finished up ahead 10-0 at halftime.

Turning with the wind at their backs, WBHS turned in a strong second half.

They ran in six unanswered tries as their wealth of possession and superior fitness allowed them to dominate in all areas.

WBHS have now achieved their pre-season goal of making the semifinals.

They will meet the top qualifier, Westlake Boys High, at Westlake High School on the North Shore, in their semifinal at noon on Saturday.

It will be a tough game, however WBHS will be encouraged by their recent form.

They believe they are in with a good chance of winning the match, after pushing Westlake very hard in their last encounter in Whangarei.
