Northland halfback Sam Nock will join the teenage talent pool at the Blues Super Rugby franchise next year.
Signing on for three seasons, the former New Zealand Schools and Saint Kentigern College 1st XV star said it was a no brainer to join the Blues despite being approached by severalNew Zealand Super Rugby franchises.
"[I] obviously got a lot of talk from outside people saying I shouldn't play for them - [but] it's home to me. They've always helped me develop, even when I was at school," Nock said.
The 18-year-old from Kerikeri, who will play for the Taniwha in the ITM Cup this season, is one of the most sought-after players coming out of the college rugby scene.
Originally from Moerewa Primary School, Nock gained a scholarship to Saint Kentigern College in Auckland, where he played three years in the 1st XV, including his final year as captain.
Nock's role in helping the world-beating Saint Kentigern's team remain unbeaten for nearly three years - in which they won the national schools title, the Auckland 1A competition title and the Sanix World Rugby Youth Tournament in 2013 - made him standout as a must-have selection for the New Zealand Schools side.
His key role for New Zealand Schools during wins against Fiji and Australia cemented attention from Super Rugby selectors nationwide.
"It's really exciting to be part of the Blues and I've been really impressed with the environment, since I've been involved, and learned a lot already," Nock said. "All the staff and players have welcomed me into the group and I can't wait until next season."
Blues high-performance manager Tony Hanks said Nock was ready for Super Rugby.
"He joins a group of young players who we have identified as possessing the skills and, most importantly, the attitude and aptitude to be successful in the professional rugby scene for the Blues.
"The Blues are working hard with our provincial unions and with schools on identifying talent and Sam most certainly fits into that category as both a very talented player and future leader."
