Solomon Alaimalo continued his rise as a rugby player by being selected in the Chiefs' 38-man Super Rugby squad.

The Northland fullback starred for the Taniwha in his first Mitre 10 Cup campaign, clearly impressing the selectors.

Alaimalo said it was a surreal time for him when he got the news.

"I got a call from my coach Dale McLeod saying that Dave Rennie (Chiefs coach) wanted to talk to me. And it sort of kicked off from there," he said.

"It was a big decision as I had to choose either the Blues or the Chiefs. Once I had decided I was probably feeling more relieved that it was all done as well as excited that I'd be a part of the Chiefs franchise."

Alaimalo led Northland in metres (530), ranked highly in offloads and was a constant threat with ball in hand.

He quickly alerted the important people around him of his decision, and has learnt a lot in his sole campaign for Northland.

"The first people I told were my Mum and Dad, who were really excited. Also told my agent and Dale," he said.

"Something I've learnt at Northland that I can take with me to Chiefs is that I have to take my opportunities when given and train hard."

"My ultimate rugby goal is like every other Kiwi's dream - to be an All Black."

His induction day is November 29 and pre-season kicks off on December 1 as he looks to secure a spot in the final squad.

Northland had a total of seven players making Super Rugby sides.

Jone Macilai returns to Christchurch for his third season with the Crusaders, while Dan Pryor will be looking to add to his 33 caps at the Highlanders.

The Blues have picked up four Northlanders: New Zealand Under 20s halfback Sam Nock, flanker Kara Pryor, lock Josh Goodhue and hooker Matt Moulds.

Pryor played 13 games in his first Super Rugby campaign this year, forming an imposing loose forward trio with All Blacks Jerome Kaino and Steven Luatua. He is currently with the Māori All Blacks on their end of year tour.

Nock will look to add to his sole cap for the Auckland-based size, while Moulds returns for his third stint with the side.

Goodhue was signed by the Blues earlier this year.
