Roadworks on SH1 cause major traffic jam

Roadworks on SH1 just south of the Portland turn off are causing major traffic delays.

One motorist heading south said they joined the queue at Lookout Hill and it had taken an hour to reach the Portland turnoff.

On the NZTA website there is a note saying due to resurfacing traffic was heavily congested and motorists should expect delays.

They recommended motorists avoid the area but did not provide a detour route.
