Police raids on four Whangarei addresses on Thursday in the hunt for people suspected of being behind a spate of armed robberies in the city proved fruitless, but the hunt continues.

A Whangarei police spokeswoman said police raided four properties on Thursday morning looking for people believed to have been involved in at least two armed robberies of liquor outlets in the city in recent weeks.

The Whangarei Liquor Centre on Maunu Rd was robbed at gunpoint on May 20 - the second time it was robbed in a month.

Thursday's four raids involved armed police, with one raid on a McMillan Ave property lasting more than three hours as police surrounded the property and appealed for the occupants to come out. Another raid was on a Raumanga property, but none of the suspected robbers were discovered there.

The spokeswoman said the hunt for the robbers continues and anybody with information can ring Whangarei police station on 09 4304500 or anonymously on the Crimestoppers line on 0800 555 111.
