Police are speaking with the family of the 5-month-old baby who sustained serious head injuries in Northland.

A police spokesperson said inquiries have been under way since the baby was taken to Dargaville Hospital on December 28.

The baby was later transferred to Starship Hospital in Auckland for treatment.

“It’s pleasing the baby boy has since made a recovery and has been able to be discharged from hospital,” Whangārei CIB Detective Sergeant Shane Pilmer, of Whangārei CIB, said in a statement today.

“We have been speaking with the baby’s family as part of ongoing inquiries.”

Police are focusing on December 28, and what led to the baby’s serious head injuries, he said.

“It’s concerning for investigators when anyone sustains serious injuries such as these, and these concerns are only heightened when it involves some of our most vulnerable members of the community,” Pilmer said.

“We would like to hear from anyone with information that can provide clarity on what has taken place. As part of this appeal, I encourage people to come forward and they can do so in confidence.”

People can update police online or call 105, using the reference number 241229/1679.

Information can also be provided anonymously via Crime Stoppers on 0800 555 111.

It continues a grim start to the year for Kiwi kids after multiple child deaths in the first week of 2025.

A 34-year-old man was charged with murder after allegedly killing a baby and trying to kill another child and a woman in Hamilton on New Year’s Day.

A special bedside court hearing was held for the man and he was granted interim name suppression.

The names of the baby victim, child and injured woman were also suppressed.

In Southland, a 3-year-old died after being struck by a vehicle in a driveway on New Year’s Day at a residential address in Gore.

“Our thoughts are with the child’s family at this sad time,” police said.
