Police are investigating after a motorcyclist was found dead in a creek beside Otaika Valley Rd, Whangārei early this morning.

Acting Detective Senior Sergeant Shane Pilmer said the man’s motorbike was located on the side of the road.

“At this stage, the circumstances are being treated as unexplained and require further investigation.”

A section of SH15 is closed between SH1 at Otaika and SH14 and Maungatapere for scene examinations.

According to New Zealand Transport Agency Waka Kotahi, it was expected to remain closed until Thursday afternoon.

Pilmer said locals needing to access their properties should approach uniformed staff at the cordon.

An inner cordon has also been placed around the scene itself.

Motorists reported seeing police vehicles and caution tape near a layby when Otaika Valley Rd was open earlier in the day.
