Police have found the items stolen from a tourist who was assaulted in Northland.

A bike and tent belonging to a German tourist who was seriously assaulted while travelling through Northland have been found in bush.

Police found the items in a forestry area about 150 metres off Cove Road between Mangawhai Heads and Langs Beach. All the 48-year-old man's possessions, including passport and clothes, were stolen.

Police would like to hear from a man called "Steve", who took the victim - suffering head and facial injuries - to the Waipu Medical Centre about 6pm on Thursday last week.

Police said he had cycled from Wellsford that day and had gone into the forest to camp. Police would like to hear from anyone who saw the man cycling from Wellsford to Mangawhai Heads and along Cove Road towards Langs Beach on November 13. He was riding a green bicycle and was wearing a black lycra suit and a dark coloured helmet. The man remains in hospital.

Contact Detective Constable Natasha Waterhouse on 0800 555 111 or email natasha.waterhouse@police.govt.nz, or contact Crimestoppers.
