A man suffered serious injuries in a dog attack in Whangārei this morning.

The incident happened on Leith St, Morningside, about 9.40am and police, St John paramedics and animal control officers rushed to the scene after a member of the public called 111.

Sergeant Ryan Gray said according to initial reports, a man was bitten when he tried to separate his two dogs fighting.

The man's hands and arms were bitten and two St John paramedics attended to him at the scene before transporting him to the Whangārei Hospital.

Gray said police provided peace in the area while Armourguard officers looked for the dogs.
