A person has died in a crash on Mangakahia Rd, near Nukutawhiti in Northland.

Police are at the scene of a fatal crash on Mangakahia Rd, near Nukutawhiti in Northland.

A police spokesman said a vehicle had crashed and the driver had died at the scene.There was no one else in the vehicle.

Emergency services were called to the scene shortly after 9am after reports of an accident approximately 3km south of the Twin Bridges, near Nukutawhiti, about 30km south of Kaikohe.

The road was initially closed but one lane reopened approximately an hour later.

There were no diversions and motorists were asked to be patient.

The Serious Crash Unit has been advised.

A kaumatua was understood to be on the way to the scene to bless the site.

The death was the first road fatality in Northland this year. Last year, 40 people died on Northland's roads.
