One person has died following a crash in Mamaranui, north of Dargaville.

Emergency services - including a helicopter and ambulance - responded to the single car crash on State Highway 12 near Mamaranui Rd around 6pm.

A police spokesperson said it's likely the road would remain closed for some time.

SH12 is closed between Omamari Rd in Maropiu and Babylon Coast Rd in Parore.

Motorists are asked to avoid the area.
