One death, serious injuries from two car accidents in Northland

A man has died after a crash in Awanui, Northland.

Two vehicles collided head-on at Kareponia Hill on State Highway 10, Awanui about 5.45pm, Senior Sergeant Brian Swann said.

He said a man had died and a woman was flown from the scene in a serious condition.

Mr Swann said two other people were involved in the crash, their injuries are not yet known, but were not believed to be as serious.

The road is closed, with diversions in place.

About 10 minutes later, an 11-year-old girl was critically injured when she was caught between the door and the body of a vehicle when it struck a fence post.

The crash occurred on McAlister Rd, Mangapai.

Mr Swann said when police arrived it looked like a vehicle with no driver had rolled and run over a person before coming to rest up against a gate.

The girl taken to Whangarei Hospital by St John Ambulance.

The Police Serious Crash Unit was attending both crashes.
