One dead in Whangarei crash

The scene of a fatal accident on State Highway One, at Oakleigh, south of Whangarei, this morning.

Update 9.15am:

A 45-year-old man has died following a fatal crash south of Whangarei this morning.

About 7.15am a car, heading north on State Highway One, appears to have lost control and crossed the centre line on Smeatons Hill then gone into the path of a fully laden logging truck that was heading south, police say.

The man, who was the sole occupant of the car, has died at the scene. The truck driver was not injured.

Diversions are in place at State Highway One/Managai Road and State Highway One/Maungakaramea Road.

These are expected to be in place for the next two hours.

The Serious Crash Unit is at the scene and investigating the cause of the crash.

8.30am:

A person has died after a logging truck and a car collided on State Highway 1 near Oakleigh, south of Whangarei, this morning.

Fire, police and ambulances raced to the accident which happened at 7.15am on Smeatons Hill, south of Portland Rd.

One person travelling in the car died at the scene. Police say there are no other injuries.

The crash has blocked both lanes of the highway and diversions are in place on Mangapai Rd and Maungakaramea Rd.
