A Kaikohe man appeared in court today in relation to the death of a 19-year-old cyclist in Ōkaihau earlier this week.

The 27-year-old has been charged with allegedly failing to stop and ascertain injury after the young person’s body was found on Settlers Way around 10.15pm on January 28.

The man appeared in court on Friday and was granted bail until 18 February when he will be expected to enter a plea.

If found guilty, the charge carries a maximum penalty of 5 years imprisonment and a fine of up to $20,000.

The man has interim name suppression until his next court hearing when it will be readdressed.
