NZME is keeping Northland up to date in news, sport and music, according to the latest 2017 GfK commercial radio survey.

Coast is the No 1 station for people over 40, as well as being the top station in urban Whangarei. Newstalk ZB takes the top spot as No 1 news station, with Radio Sport taking No 1 sports station.

The Hits has more people listening, and Mix has grown its audience.

Auckland/Northland general manager Neil Jackson is pleased to see NZME continue to have a strong presence in Northland.

"It is great to see Coast is the No 1 station for people over 40, its target demographic, and Newstalk ZB and Radio Sport have taken the top spots in news and sport respectively. Our local host on The Hits, Charmaine Soljak, has more people listening as she continues to engage with Northland locals."

The total New Zealand commercial radio market grew by 9500 listeners while NZME's reach grew again (more than 31,000). When combined with NZME's print (Northern Advocate) and digital channels, NZME connect advertisers with over 3.3 million people.

NZME managing editor Shayne Currie said Newstalk ZB continued to deliver. This standout station has been No 1 since 2003, growing its share again to 10.5 per cent nationally.

"We've had a huge survey, reflecting a busy news period, in which our broadcasters and journalists have covered major events and broken many agenda-setting stories," said Mr Currie.
