People have been flocking to Northland's beaches during the recent fabulous weather - but things are about to turn nasty.

Been enjoying Northland's terrific summer weather that has seen sunny days and the temperature soar to 30C in Kerikeri and 29c in Whangarei in the past week?

Well, make the most of it because things could start to turn nasty tomorrow with a slow moving front likely to bring heavy rain and high humidity across the region.

MetService meteorologist Tui McInnes said a low pressure system was heading towards the country from the Tasman Sea and Northland was particularly at risk from the front.

''It's bringing a lot of moist air, which could mean a lot of rain and it will lower the temperatures you have been experiencing (in Northland). It will also bring high humidity,'' Mr McInnes said.

He said the temperatures will drop to about 24C across Northland today then possibly lower still as the week progresses.

''The northeasterly flow will also make things far more muggy and humid than it has been. There could be humidity in the 80 per cent plus range on Wednesday, but on Thursday you should start seeing humidity in the 90 per cent-plus range and then moving into Friday possibly the high 90s,'' Mr McInnes said.

He said the amount of rainfall expected can't be determined at this stage as there are two different forecasting models for the front.

''One says it could be slow moving and hang around over Northland over the weekend. If that happens there will be a lot of rain and it will get quite muggy. But the other says it could move over (Northland) on Friday or Saturday, which could leave some of the weekend fairly fine,'' he said.

Kerikeri had a high of 30.8C last Wednesday, the same day that Whangarei had a high of 29.2C.
