Northlanders among medals at Youth Commonwealth Games

Northland's next premier athletes have been in the medals at the Youth Commonwealth Games in the Bahamas.

Swimmer Ciara Smith, beach volleyballer Jasmine Milton and boxer Kyle Chen have all had success.

Smith was a beast in the pool, grabbing two medals in the breaststroke.

She took a bronze in the 50m event before going one better in the 100m and the mixed relay.

In the 50m breaststroke it was a tight affair, with less than half a second separating first from fourth.

Smith at 32.56 was just pipped by the Bahamas' Lilly Higgs by 0.04 for the silver medal, with Singapore's Christie May Mu Chue taking gold.

Then she grabbed silver in the 100m in a time of 1:10:72, just over half a second behind South Africa's Hanim Abrahams.

On the beach, Milton paired up with Ella Akkerman put on a valiant display of volleyball in their charge to the gold medal match.

They took on Australian pair Rebecca Ingram and Carrie van Rensburg for the grand prize in a tough transtasman encounter.

The Kiwi pair worked hard but were unable to vanquish the Australians, instead settling for a hard-earned silver medal.

Paihia boxer Kyle Chen took out bronze in the 75kg male division.

From the beginning Chen was at a disadvantage, not only due to being the youngest in the tournament, but also due to catching a flu-like illness when arriving into the Bahamas.

Doctors eventually cleared him to compete in the tournament and he battled his way to the semifinals.

The young pugilist then brought up his 50th amateur boxing bout against English boxer Aaron Bowen but was unable to secure victory.

He still walks away with a bronze medal for his efforts.
