"There are so many spectacular places to discover in New Zealand. Regardless of how extensively people have travelled the country, there are bound to be sights in our 50 favourites they haven't yet visited. With summer holidays just around the corner, now is a great time to get out and explore some of these places."
An interactive map on the MSC website showcases each of the destinations, along with short descriptions of what makes them special. The website also includes important tips on how to stay safe when enjoying the outdoors.
In relation to Scott Point, it says of the easy two-hour return walk: This walk is well worth it for the impressive views south over Ninety Mile Beach and Te Paki Dunes and the probability you'll have Twilight Beach all to yourself as the only other access is via the seldom-used Te Werahi track.
Of the easy walk to Mermaid Pools, it says: Walk along the beach and discover the magical Mermaid Pools at low tide. There are other wonderful walks in the area to also explore.
The MSC is running a competition to coincide with the release of the 50 favourites, inviting people to share their favourite New Zealand outdoor spot and top safety tip. Participants can win an outdoor adventure pack valued at over $500.
