Jake Rouse was winner of the Tomorrow's Leaders Award at the recent NZ Quarry Conference, with the Northland quarrying industry having its awards night on Saturday.

Northland's quarry operators have had some recent success nationally and this week is the chance for them to celebrate the local industry at the Northland Institute of Quarry Awards in Whangarei.

The awards night, at the Kamo Club, from 6pm on Saturday, is a chance for the industry to get together and celebrate its achievements.

There are four award categories:
• Northland Quarry Employee of the Year
• In Pursuit of Excellence in Northland
• Outstanding Service Provider
• Good Bugger Award

The awards come after Northland quarry operators did well at the NZ Quarry Conference in Hamilton in July.

There Jake Rouse was winner of the Tomorrow's Leaders Award; Murray Smith - winner of the RD Hassed Memorial Trophy for the most outstanding contribution to a branch and Golden Bay Cement - received a silver MIMICO Environmental Award.

Northland branch chairman Smith said the national success bodes well for the Northland Quarry Awards.

There were several contenders for the RD Hassed Memorial Trophy this year, but the judges said there was a clear majority in favour of Smith.

''He has shown leadership and has continually strived to encourage membership in the region – it was clear that his personal touch has now been rewarded,'' they said.

A MIMICO silver environmental award went to Golden Bay Cement in Whangārei for 20 years of restoring, in partnership with others, Matakohe/Limestone Island.
