Northland police constable Cam Davies is among the 25 New Zealand officers heading for East Timor to help with international efforts to restore law and order.
The group was due to leave for three months in Dili today as part of New Zealand's official development assistance programme.
Assistant police Commissioner Jon White
said the officers would work alongside the New Zealand defence force and other international police in Dili.
"New Zealand has considerable experience in providing policing services internationally, having deployed to the Solomon Islands, Bougainville, Papua New Guinea and Afghanistan in recent years," Mr White said.
Their main task would be community policing work to build relationships to help restore the confidence of the people of Dili.
Grant O'Fee, Tasman district commander and commander of the Dili deployment, said the 25 officers from all around New Zealand represented a broad range of skills and ranks.
"The team represents a wealth of policing experience and knowledge which I am sure will be appreciated in what is currently a difficult policing situation."
Superintendent O'Fee said the team had undergone special training before their departure.
