Restricted fire season

Northland has returned to a restricted fire season, which means outdoor fires can only be lit with fire permits authorised by Fire and Emergency NZ. Fire permits were reinstated on Monday after being briefly suspended due to an extreme fire risk in the region. Visit checkitsalright.nz to apply for a permit.

Time to save water

People in Northland are urged to conserve water amid the dry summer, Northland Regional Council says. Parts of the Far North and Kaipara have become drier despite the water restrictions introduced late last year. Council says the influx of visitors over upcoming long weekends will add further pressure to the region’s water supplies.

Take care as river will rise due to flushing

Northpower is warning people to be extra careful around the Wairua River on Wednesday as it flushes its power station. The Wairua power station will be closed tomorrow to flush the river of periphyton, the algae and slime that can accumulate on river beds. This will cause a sudden rise in river levels and more water in the area from Wairua Falls to the power station on Tokiri Rd.

Arrows as cruise passengers sail in

Council workers have stencilled arrows on pavements in Whangārei’s central business district to help cruise ship visitors find their way around more easily. Four cruise ships were due to berth in the district between January 18 and March 24. A Whangārei District Council spokesperson says cruise patrons had previously praised the friendly locals and unique city experience in Whangārei and had also delivered a nice little bump to the local economy.
