The Far North has a new District Court judge who will be based at Kaikohe District Court. Attorney-General Judith Collins has announced the appointment of three new District Court judges, including Derek Whitehead, who will be sworn in on March 18. Whitehead was admitted in 1995 and started practice in Morrinsville. He then worked in Taupō where he was head of a family law team, before returning north to Henderson Reeves, Whangārei, where he has been based. Since 2001 he has run his own practice, focusing on all aspects of family law.
He has been senior lawyer for children, lawyer to assist, lawyer for the subject person as well as a member of the appointment and review panels for those roles. He has been a youth advocate since 2002, regularly appearing in Cross Over Court and Koti Tai Tamariki. He has been a member of the Te Hau Awhiowhio Ōtangarei Trust Board since 2005, which provides social services to Māori communities in Te Tai Tokerau.

A Far North Lotto player is celebrating after winning more than $230,000 in Saturday night’s draw. The ticket, sold on MyLotto in the Far North, was one of 11 nationally that each won $26,312 with Lotto Second Division. The winning numbers were 5, 27, 30, 31, 32 and 33, the bonus number 7 and Powerball number 4. Powerball will be worth $12 million on Wednesday night.
Northport Group appoints CEO
Northport Group Limited has selected Rhys Jones, a senior leader at Darwin Port, to lead the recently-restructured business. As group chief executive officer, Jones will oversee the continued integration of Northport and Marsden Maritime Holdings. He will replace retiring Northport chief executive Jon Moore in July. Jones brings more than 20 years’ experience in the port and marine infrastructure sector, and says he and his family are excited to become a part of the Northland community. Northport Group is owned by Port of Tauranga, Northland Regional Council and the Ngāpuhi investment fund Tupu Tonu.
