Two people had to be cut free, including a heavily-pregnant woman, after a two-car crash. The accident happened on State Highway 11, Paihia, about 3.30pm yesterday. The two people who were removed from the vehicles suffered minor injuries. Police say the road was partially blocked andwas expected to be re-opened before dark.

A four-piece all-girl band from Bay of Islands College in Kawakawa will compete in the national finals of Smokefree Tangata Beats in Auckland this Friday. Harmonies Divergent — featuring Danika Holland (keyboard), Dana Scott (guitar), Mihitaurangi Koperu (guitar, vocals) and Jade Norman (vocals) — will compete against six other high school bands from Auckland, East Coast, Whanganui and Wellington at the Dorothy Winstone Centre at Auckland Girls' Grammar from 7pm.
Smokefree Tangata Beats, which turns 20 years old this year, was set up to recognise and promote Māori and Pasifika musical talent at New Zealand schools. Past success stories from the Smokefree Tangata Beats awards include Waipu thrash metal trio Alien Weaponry, Strangely Arousing and Nesian Mystik.
Northland court closure
Northland courts will be closed for two hours when the Ministry of Justice workers go on a two-hour strike today to fight for better pay for female workers. More than 70 workers, who are members of the Public Service Association, are working in the Whangārei District and High courts, Maori Land Court in Whangārei, Kaikohe and Kaitaia District Court. Some of the jobs they do include court security, registry, collections and court reporting for the national transcription service. All courthouses, tribunal offices and public counters will closed between 10.30am and 12.30pm today.

Police are not treating as suspicious the death of a person in central Whangārei. Police attended to the sudden death near the public toilets at the Town Basin shortly before 2pm yesterday which was believed to be a possible medical event. There were no suspicious circumstances, police said. The Coroner will be notified.
Roadworks set to begin
Overnight roadworks are set to start on a busy Whangārei road. Whangārei District Council contractors will be milling and re-surfacing Riverside Dr from the bottom of Onerahi Hill to the bridge just before Dave Culham Dr. The work will be carried out over four nights from 6pm to 6am, starting from September 24. The work is weather-dependent.
Kaitaia phantom tyre slasher returns
It all went quiet for a while, but police warned Kaitaia's phantom tyre slasher appeared to have returned last week. A number of incidents had been reported, Senior Sergeant Russell Richards said, including one at the old Pak'nSave carpark in Kaitaia on Saturday, despite the fact that it had been a hive of activity. He urged the public to watch for, and to report, any suspicious behaviour.
