Northland news in brief: Kaitāia and Karikari firefighters contain Kaingaroa scrub fire

Firefighters from Kaitāia and Karikari responded to a blaze in scrub and gorse at Kaingaroa.

New investment boss

Northland Inc has appointed Tui Rutherford (Te Rarawa, Ngāpuhi, Te Roroa) as its new head of investment. Rutherford will join the organisation on January 19, bringing leadership and an understanding of investment, economic development and the public sector. Originally from the Hokianga, he also has a connection to Te Tai Tokerau that further supports his alignment with the organisation and its kaupapa. Northland Inc chief executive Paul Linton said he was looking forward to welcoming him on to the team.

Crews tackle scrub fire

Firefighters from Kaitāia and Karikari responded to a blaze in scrub and gorse at Kaingaroa about 3.30pm Tuesday. A Fire and Emergency New Zealand spokesperson said the fire was near buildings but the wind direction kept it at bay. The fire was confined to an area of about 100m x 50m and extinguished within 90 minutes.

Victim heads home

A man hospitalised after an alleged assault in Hongi St, Kaikohe, has been discharged and is recovering at home. Police have since charged a 26-year-old man with wounding with intent to injure. The accused appeared in Kaikohe District Court on Monday and was granted bail to reappear on February 10.

Carnival day

Families are invited to enjoy a fun-filled day at the Ōtaua Carnival Day, presented by the Ōtaua Sports Club and Hauora Hokianga. Organisers said the event will be a fun day for all ages and includes bouncy castles, games, food stalls and trucks and more. It takes place at the Ōtaua Sports Club on Renwick Rd on January 24 and is gold coin entry.

Asbestos removal

A licensed asbestos removalist will take away asbestos-containing materials from Kaitāia College between January 19 and 23. The Ministry of Education website has further information about the management of asbestos and procedures to ensure the safety of all affected by the work at the school and community. Epic auctions

Two local organisations had successful auctions at the weekend and raised thousands of dollars. The Mangonui Lion’s Club collected more than $9000 and the Hokianga RSA over $13,000 from their respective annual sales.
