Driver hospitalised
The driver of a car involved in a crash with a motorbike was taken to Whangarei Hospital in a serious condition on Saturday night. The crash happened on Otaika Valley Rd about 6.30pm on Saturday. Scott Osmond, of the Fire and Emergency northern communications centre, said the driver gotout of the car before it caught fire. The car was fully involved when Portland firefighters arrived.
Treaty of Waitangi workshop
People can gain an insight into the history of Aotearoa through a Treaty of Waitangi workshop. Held at Glenbervie's Pehiaweri Marae this month, the workshop, which involves activity-based learning, will help people answer questions such as ''what is the Treaty of Waitangi?'' and will compare the Declaration of Independence with the Treaty. A certificate will be available on completion of the course, which is being held on May 3, 10, 17 and 24 from 6.30pm to 8pm. The first workshop will start at 6.15pm to allow time for a powhiri. A kayaker who fell into the water was picked up by a boatie and brought to dry land yesterday. The incident happened just before 10am yesterday, off Onerahi. Northland Police Search and Rescue co-ordinator Sergeant Craig Burrows said the kayaker got caught in the wind and was swept out to sea before falling out. No search and rescue was activated.
Pedestrian hit by vehicle
A pedestrian received serious injuries when they were hit by a vehicle on Friday afternoon. The crash happened on State Highway 10 in Taipa about 3.20pm. The injuries were not life-threatening and the person was treated by ambulance. The road remained open during the incident.
Two Lotto players from Mount Maunganui and Alexandra each won $500,000 in Lotto First Division draw on Saturday. The winning tickets were sold at Bayfair Lotto in Mount Maunganui and Alexandra New World in Alexandra. Powerball was not struck and has rolled over to Wednesday night, when the jackpot will be $9 million. Strike Four has also rolled over and will be $200,000 on Wednesday.
