Whangarei-based community and environmental advocate Peter Hughes has been selected as the Green Party candidate for Northland.

Whangarei-based community and environmental advocate Peter Hughes has been selected as the Green Party candidate for Northland.

He will be campaigning for the party vote to strengthen our representation in Parliament.
Born in Napier and raised in Auckland, he has been active in his local community since moving to Whangarei in 2014, continuing decades of community involvement focused on employment rights, education, housing and environmental issues.

Peter has worked for NZEI for the past 10 years.

"I am standing for the Green Party in this election as I believe it is essential that the environment and social responsibility are represented in any future government. This will only happen with a strong Green Party vote.

"The Greens have been a major positive influence on Parliament. They have alerted New Zealand to the shocking state of our polluted waterways, introduced Buy Kiwi Made, and the Enviroschools programme, and initiated the $1 billion warm dry homes plan.

"The Greens have drawn nationwide attention to the growing inequality and poverty in NZ and the drastic impact this is having in our communities.

"The Green voice in Parliament has led the way to bringing these issues to the fore.
"That voice needs to be stronger than ever.

"Locally, our beautiful coastlines are threatened by sea level rise and off shore drilling plans.
"The massive commercial exploitation of the once pristine Poroti Springs should be an issue of grave concern to all Northland residents.

"Climate change and environmental protection needs a nationwide government response.
"The Green Party has the solutions and a positive vision to address these challenges.

"The Greens are committed to making New Zealand carbon Neutral by 2050 and we have a plan for making this happen."
