No one has yet taken responsibility for rebuilding the seawall at Ruakaka Beach Holiday Park several months after large slabs of concrete began breaking away from the 60-year-old structure.

Most of the 2m-high wall has tumbled on to the sand and rocks of the Ruakaka estuary, adjacent to the camp site.

The wall began breaking up in June, leading to fears some of the camp's powered tent sites would become unusable and the area unsafe. Community members also expressed concerns that resulting erosion could compromise the estuary's water quality.

"Absolutely nothing has come from meetings with Department of Conservation and Northland Regional Council," camp manager Mike Abel said.

"No one wants to put any money toward it. The camp's in the position that it just can't pay and DoC's stance is 'monitor and retreat'."

Mr Abel said initial estimates indicate that replacing the 50m-long wall could cost up to $70,000.

The land was bestowed in the care of a non-profit making community-based committee early last century.

The land itself, however, is on Crown reserve for which DoC is ultimately responsible.

Tony Phipps, NRC operations director, said the council had looked into the wall's collapse but was satisfied there was no immediate danger to people or the environment.

DoC's Whangarei area manager Sue Reed-Thomas has not returned calls.
